This is not the whole comparison, just a basic understanding so that you can choose whatever you want.

Do you have lots of data, you want things to be speed up if data increases. If this is not the case then there are more chances to use Google sheet, WHY.. since you would not find any difference and you can use the free tool anytime anywhere, even on your phones (that works.)

Google Sheet uses GAS (Google Apps Script), subset of Java and works somewhat similar to VBA.
The users who uses VBA and if they come to know Excel online does not support that, then they have become the normal user :(.
Google has more grip on web as compare to Microsoft..so you got my point. Anything best will be done on web, Google Sheet will have that feature.
Some specific locations where Internet speed is good, they have tendency to use Google Sheets and they recommend it to everyone, if you start using you see it is very easy and intuitive.

Excel is fast, accurate and bug free and also 32/64 bit compatible. If you use windows then you can play with any object, you can open any kind of file, you can do anything with it what you can do manually using window's API.
You are in office and you are working..more chances that one of the software is open in your system is Excel (more of corporate software).
The older one...everyone heard about Excel 2003.
Ms office application connectivity. This is widely accepted that Window's software has captured a huge market. So it is very obvious that you might be working with Outlook, Word and Excel. If you are good in Excel you can automate anything in MS office application.
You want to learn it, do not speak loudly, there are N numbers of users who wants to kidnap you to be part of their training session. It is true. There are wide range of training are there, actually it is good business (I also used to give that, but did not kidnap anyone :P)

Google Sheets comes at the cost of nothing and if you are more into excel, you hate it. If I accidentally put you in Google Sheet, you would not find any formula missing. Do they work fast, yes and amazing fact they even calculated after closing the file. It means everything is happening on web.
Google Sheet formulas are similar to Excel, if not similar then they are so interesting. If you have not understood till now, search Query, Importrange, Importxml, Filter, Unique and many more.
Google Sheets now moving to business domain, now companies are buying Google Business Suit, It also helps to control several admin activities, now more chances are there that someday it will be used widely.
Most important it has the revision history features, you can restore any version.
